Required Textbook: Thomas. O. Lambdin, Introduction to Biblical Hebrew (New York: Scribner, 1971).

Course Description:
This is an introductory course on Biblical Hebrew covering the first 23 chapters of Lambdin , Introduction to Biblical Hebrew.

Course Objectives:
1. To enable the student to read and pronounce correctly Hebrew words and sentences and to memorize Hebrew words which appear frequently in the Hebrew Bible.
2. To teach some of the basics of Hebrew grammar so that, with further study, the students will be able to read and translate from the Hebrew Bible.
3. To enable the student to make use of Hebrew dictionaries and grammars, theological dictionaries and encyclopedias, books and articles on scripture and theology, and other reference resources that employ Hebrew words and phrases.
4. To teach the student to make use of the BibleWorks computer program and other CD programs and internet resources.
5. To provide a good foundation in beginning Hebrew for those students who wish to continue the study of the biblical languages in preparation for post-graduate degrees in scripture

Class Expectations from Fr. Randy
For ordinary (officially enrolled) and extraordinary student (audit like CTS):
1. Regular attendance in class is essential to the learning of a language. A student who is absent twice will be asked to withdraw from the course.
2. There will be a quiz every meeting which all students are expected to surpass.
3. An exercise from Lambdin is given as an assignment which will be corrected and discussed in class. The student must then come to class prepared.

For ordinary or officially enrolled student:
1. The student must obtain a passing score in each of the first thee quizzes (10/30). A student who obtains a total score lower than 30 points will be asked to withdraw from the course or to be in audit status.
2. The student must also pass the midterm exam (50/100 or from 75% to 100%) to continue to the next level.

Oral Participation/Exercises – 20%
Midterm Exam - 30%
Total: 100% Class Standing

Nov 10 – Alphabet
Nov 17 – Lessons 1-2
Nov 24 – Lessons 3-6
Dec 1 - Lessons 7-10
Dec 8 - Schola vacat
Jan 5- Lessons 11-13
Jan 12 – Lessons 14-15 – Midterm Examination
Sr. Miriam takes over from this point.
